MARIÉN LUÉVANO

Marién Luévano began her flamenco studies with Mercedes Amaya and Joaquin Fajardo in her native Mexico. Winner of a various grants from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, FONCA), she continued her training in Spain, notably with José Galvan, los Farrucos, Angelita Gomez, el Guito and Manuel Reyes. She also began her professional career there, dancing in numerous tablaos, including the Peñas Flamencas circuit in Seville and Jerez, Casa de la Memoria, Torre Macarena and El Foro in Seville.

She later danced with the companies of Mercedes Amaya, La Morris, Miura, Flamenco Rosario, La Otra Orilla, Theatre flamenco of San Francisco. Alongside her work as a choreographer and performer, she teaches in Japan, Taiwan, Belgium, Germany and Canada. Marién Luévano is currently artistic director of her own company and of the Hojas de Té flamenco studio in Mexico. She is invited to perform all over the world.

Her dance is distinguished by its ardor, sensuality and strength.

Born in Torreón, Coahuila, Marién grew up in a household deeply immersed in the performing arts, including theatre, costume design, and fashion. This upbringing provided an environment conducive to exploring her own artistic language and developing more personal stage proposals beyond the traditional framework of flamenco.

Marién Luévano embarked on her artistic journey in 2003, initially focusing on flamenco with the support of FONCA (National Fund for Culture and the Arts), which enabled her to create her first solo work under the direction of Nora Manneck. Titled “MAR,” this piece delved into choreographic explorations of the cantes de ida y vuelta of flamenco. Subsequently, Marién collaborated with other dancers on creations such as “Un poquito de compás,” “Teoria y juego del Duende,” and “Dos en compañía y un momento.”

Expanding her horizons, Marién ventured into projects integrating diverse music and corporealities. One notable example is “Sonidos del Desierto,” supported by FONCA’s A Stage Creation program, a collaboration with sound artist Antonio Russek. This choreographic and electroacoustic creation explores the protected areas of the Coahuila desert and the desert music exhibited at the Saltillo museum, under the direction of Nora Manneck.
